How to Find Peace When Life Feels Out of Control

How to Find Peace When Life Feels Out of Control

There are seasons when life feels manageable—and then there are seasons when everything seems to happen at once.

A problem at work. A difficult school year. An unexpected diagnosis. Financial stress. Conflict in a relationship. The loss of someone you love. Sometimes even something relatively small can be the final wave that leaves you feeling overwhelmed.

When life feels chaotic, where do you turn?

The story of Jesus walking on the water in Matthew 14:22–33 offers an important reminder: Jesus does not promise that we will never encounter storms. He promises to meet us in the middle of them.

Why Does Life Feel So Overwhelming?

In the biblical world, the sea often represented more than water. It could symbolize chaos—the unpredictable forces that threaten the order and security of life.

That makes the scene in Matthew 14 especially powerful.

The disciples are in a boat being battered by waves. The wind is against them. Then, in the middle of everything they cannot control, they see Jesus walking toward them on the water.

The storm is real. The waves are real. But so is the presence of Christ.

Our storms may look different, but the experience is familiar. Life can change without warning. People get sick. Jobs disappear. Relationships become difficult. Loved ones die before we are ready to say goodbye. Things that should be simple suddenly become complicated.

Christian faith does not require us to pretend those things aren't happening.

Instead, it gives us somewhere to look when they do.

Jesus Meets Us in the Storm

It would be comforting if following Jesus meant nothing difficult would ever happen to us.

But that isn't the promise of the Gospel.

The better promise is that when the wind and waves are at their worst, Jesus is still there.

In Matthew's account, Jesus does something extraordinary: He walks across the very thing that is terrifying the disciples.

The chaos does not overwhelm Him.

The wind and waves do not have the final word.

And when life feels out of control, that changes where we can place our attention. Instead of allowing fear to consume every thought, we can begin looking for Christ in the middle of what we're facing.

What Peter Teaches Us About Fear

Peter sees Jesus and steps out of the boat toward Him.

For a moment, Peter walks on the water. Then something changes.

He notices the wind.

He becomes afraid.

And he begins to sink.

Peter's reaction is deeply human. When the storm around us becomes loud enough, focusing on the storm is easy. Fear is easy. Imagining everything that could go wrong is easy.

Keeping our attention fixed on Jesus is harder.

That's one reason this story matters so much. Peter's failure isn't simply an embarrassing detail preserved in the Gospel. It teaches us something about discipleship.

The question isn't whether storms will come. The question is where we will look when they do.

How Can I Keep My Eyes on Jesus?

Waiting until life is falling apart to develop a spiritual life makes navigating those moments much harder.

Instead, we can begin building habits now that train our attention toward Christ.

That might mean establishing a regular rhythm of prayer, reading Scripture each day, participating in worship, joining a Bible study or small group, or simply creating a few quiet minutes each morning to turn your attention toward God.

These practices don't guarantee a life without difficulty.

They prepare us to recognize Christ when difficulty comes.

Over time, prayer and Scripture teach us where to turn when fear begins demanding our attention. They help us remember that the storm around us is not greater than the One walking toward us through it.

Finding Peace in the Middle of Chaos

You may not be able to control the circumstances surrounding you today.

You may not be able to immediately fix the problem, calm the conflict or know how everything is going to turn out.

But you can choose where to place your attention.

When the wind rises, look for Jesus.

When fear becomes loud, look for Jesus.

When life feels chaotic and you aren't sure what to do next, look for Jesus.

The Christian promise isn't that there will always be smooth sailing. It is that Christ remains Lord even when the waves are high.

And when we learn to keep our eyes fixed on Him, we can discover His peace even in the middle of the storm.
