How to Follow Jesus in Everyday Life: Finding Purpose in Ordinary Time
Many Christians experience a spiritual high during Christmas, Easter, or other significant moments in the church year. These seasons are filled with celebration, reflection, and renewed focus on God's work in the world. But what happens after the holidays are over? What does it look like to follow Jesus in the ordinary routines of everyday life?
This is one of the great gifts of Ordinary Time.
Despite its name, Ordinary Time is anything but ordinary. It reminds us that most of the Christian life is not lived during mountaintop moments. It is lived in everyday faithfulness—in our homes, workplaces, friendships, and communities.
Why Ordinary Time Matters
The church calendar guides Christians through the story of God's redemption. During Advent, we learn to wait for Christ. At Christmas, we celebrate His coming. During Lent, we repent and prepare our hearts. Easter proclaims Christ's victory over death, and Pentecost celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Then comes Ordinary Time.
Far from being a pause in the story, Ordinary Time is where we learn to live in light of everything God has done. The question shifts from "What has Christ done?" to "How should I live because of what Christ has done?"
Growing Spiritually in Everyday Life
Many Christians assume spiritual growth happens primarily during conferences, retreats, or emotionally powerful worship experiences. While those moments can be meaningful, Scripture consistently points us toward daily faithfulness.
Spiritual maturity is formed through ordinary habits:
- Regular prayer
- Reading Scripture
- Worshiping with the Church
- Serving others
- Practicing forgiveness
- Loving our neighbors
- Remaining faithful in our daily responsibilities
The Holy Spirit was not given simply to create extraordinary experiences. The Spirit was given to transform ordinary people into faithful disciples.
Living as Spirit-Filled Christians
After Pentecost, the Church entered a new chapter. The Holy Spirit was poured out upon God's people, empowering them to continue Christ's mission in the world.
That same calling belongs to Christians today.
Every believer must wrestle with two important questions:
Who is God calling me to be?
What is God calling me to do?
Following Jesus is not merely about believing certain truths. It is about allowing God's Spirit to shape our character, guide our decisions, and direct our lives.
Whether you are raising children, serving in a local church, working a job, attending school, or caring for aging parents, God is at work through ordinary acts of faithfulness.
Finding Your Place in God's Story
One of the greatest challenges of modern life is determining where we find our identity. We are constantly tempted to define ourselves by success, achievement, politics, education, possessions, or social status.
The Christian faith offers something far deeper.
Our identity is rooted in the Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The Father created us.
The Son redeemed us.
The Holy Spirit dwells within us and empowers us to live as God's people.
When we understand our lives within God's larger story, even ordinary moments take on eternal significance.
The Beauty of Everyday Faithfulness
The Christian life is not built on a handful of extraordinary moments. It is built through years of trusting Christ in ordinary circumstances.
Ordinary Time reminds us that God's work did not end with the Resurrection, Ascension, or Pentecost. The story continues through the lives of His people.
Every prayer matters.
Every act of obedience matters.
Every opportunity to love, serve, forgive, and witness matters.
Because the ordinary places of life are often where God does His most extraordinary work.
If you feel spiritually stuck or wonder how to grow closer to God, begin with the simple rhythms of faithfulness. Christ has died. Christ is risen. The Holy Spirit has been poured out. Now, by God's grace, we are invited to live each day as participants in His ongoing story.
